FireSmart Assessments

As our province experiences larger and more destructive wildfires, there is an ever-increasing concern for property owners to protect values. The assessments cover construction & upkeep of homes & outbuildings, strategic landscaping & planting, and vegetation management of surrounding forested areas in accordance with FireSmart Canada. Learn more about the FireSmart services we offer and the subsidized program available to residents of Golden and Area A.

Fuel Reduction

The strategic thinning of a forest landscape will slow or stop the spread of a running fire, and allow it to burn off the surface fuels only, which can be a good start to protecting communities. Click here to view a scene from a fuel modification project we carried out in Oct, 2021 in Panorama Ski Village, showing debris piles burning amongst a freshly treated area. This project was in conjunction with Wildlands Eco-Forestry, the prime contractor, and the Shuswap First Nations, being the land owner. This type of fuel reduction is a way to restore forests to a state where destructive running crown fires become very unlikely. Cultural burning is another means to achieve this goal.

Contracted Wildfire Services

Sawtooth has a standing arrangement for Danger Tree Assessor/Faller, Faller Co-ordinator, and Danger Tree Specialist services with the BC Wildfire Service, and is called upon as needed. We have sub-contractors on our call list all over the province, enabling us to provide these services to anywhere in BC.

This emergency response style of work, and the dynamic nature of wildfire make for an invigorating lifestyle during busy summers. Our fallers have extensive backgrounds working with fire, and when called upon fill a 14-day shift, followed by a 3-day rest, and often will go back out again. The service provided by contract fallers on the fireline is primarily entering newly burnt timber stands ahead of suppression crews. We’ll conduct danger tree assessments & take appropriate measures to remove overhead hazards that pose risk to those who put out the fire. Here are a few shots of fire scenes from recent years.

Rec Sites & Trails Maintenance

Under contract to RSTBC, we conduct Assessment & Removal of Danger Trees among BC’s iconic backcountry camping areas. Mostly in the spring season, this work is conducted ahead of camping season to ensure the safety of public when enjoying these trails and rec sites.
